TraditionalmedicineforHIVtogoontrial
Clinicaltrialstotestatraditionalmedicine’seffectivenessindelayingtheonsetofAIDSinHIV-positivepatientswillbegininSouthAfricawithinweeks,accordingtoresearchers.
Approximately125HIV-positivepatientsatEdendaleHospitalinPietermaritzburginKwaZulu-NatalprovincewilltakepartintrialsoftheherbSutherlandiafrutescens,awell-knownSouthAfricantraditionalmedicine.
ThepurposeofthetrialwillbetotestthesafetyandeffectivenessofcapsulesofSutherlandiainpatientsnewlydiagnosedwithHIV.
Thescientistsannouncedtheirplanslastweek(28August),sayingtheprojectwillmostlikelybeginthismonth,oncetheSouthAfricanMedicinesControlCouncilcompletesitsfinalregulatorycheck.TheyexpecttohaveresultsbyAugust2009.
TheresearchwillbeconductedbytheSouthAfricanuniversitiesofKwaZulu-NatalandtheWesternCape,alongwiththeTraditionalHealers’AssociationofSouthAfricaandtheUS-basedUniversityofMissouri.
TraditionalhealersuseSutherlandiafrutescens,sometimesknownas’cancerbush’,totreatahostofailmentsfromweightlosstoachesandpains.
Sutherlandiahasseveralactiveingredients,saidQuintonJohnson,oneofthestudyresearchersanddirectoroftheInternationalCentreforIndigenousPhytotherapyStudiesattheUniversityoftheWesternCape.
Theplantcontainspinitol(acompoundwithanti-diabeticproperties),canavine(usedbytraditionalhealerstotreatwastingdiseasesliketuberculosis)andtheaminoacidGABA,whichproducesafeelingofwellbeing.
NcebaGqaleni,deputydeanoftheUniversityofKwaZulu-Natal’sNelsonR.MandelaSchoolofMedicine,saidthiswasthefirstcollaborationbetweenscientistsandtraditionalhealerstoassesstheeffectivenessofindigenouspracticesintreatingsuchaserioushealthissue.
